Madam, - It has been coming increasingly clear for some time that Dublin Airport has become almost inaccessible to traffic from outside the city area.

How can anyone plan a journey via the M50 with the objective of getting to the airport at a given time?

Last Wednesday night's gridlock was tough on the commuters who got stuck for hours, but what about those that had travelled for up to three hours with the expectation that another 30 minutes on our premier motorway would see them at the airport? How many missed flights at considerable cost and inconvenience?

Even allowing an extra 90 minutes for delays is often not enough. Last week three hours would not have been enough.

It is not too late for the Government to abandon the notion of a third terminal and look instead at the feasibility of an additional airport to the west of Dublin. Such a site would be accessible to air travellers from all over the country and with high-speed rail links (which are already in place) it would be less than 30 minutes from the city centre. - Yours, etc,
