Sir, - I have read with interest and sadness the correspondence regarding the Irish Traditional Music Report. This seems to come down to who got mentioned and who didn't get mentioned. Is this an old Irish custom?
The Oireachtas Committee is to be complimented on the generous recognition which it has given to the traditional arts, as reflected in its comprehensive recommendations.
The question must be asked: would it have been better if Senator O Murchu had produced a weighty tome to gather dust on some self, like most reports do? He showed considerable skill in producing a report which empowered the all-party committee members to unanimously throw their weight behind the native arts in the manner in which they have done.
I would respectfully suggest that we get on with the real work of endeavouring to have the recommendations implemented. The ghost of lost opportunities is known to haunt those responsible for the loss. - Yours, etc.
