Sir, - In 1995 the G8 countries' military expenditure was $459 billion. A tiny fraction of this would cancel the unpayable debts of the world's poorest countries.
I am very concerned about the impact of debt on the lives of a billion people living in developing countries. Poverty, disease and death are crippling men, women and children in the Third World.
How is it that a young baby born in Zambia is already $300 in debt before it has taken its first step or said its first word? It is an outrage that people are dying due to the greed of many of the world's most powerful countries.
I have joined a campaign that is calling for the cancellation of unpayable Third World debt by the year 2000, and I would like to encourage other people's awareness of this sad and distressing situation. -Yours, etc., Jane-Ann Mc0Kenna, Loreto Secondary School,
