Madam, - Today's (November 26th) announcement by the Department of Transport that it is investing €117 million on 67 new inter-city carriages is bewildering, to say the least. Considering that many stretches of line traversing the country are still "single lines" - allowing only one train to pass at a time - and in the prospect that investment in rail under the current Development Plan will probably suffer the same fate as the Roads Programme - i.e. be shelved - is the Government not putting the cart before the horse? Or in this case, 67 air-conditioned carts before the horse? - Yours, etc.
