Taking a toll on motorists

Sir, – As I handed over my €1

Sir, – As I handed over my €1.75 to the non-speaking cashier at the East Link toll bridge this morning, I wondered how many times that bridge has been paid for at this stage.

The bridge was opened in 1984. Presumably, a bridge that generates over €250,000 (conservative estimate) in tolls per week must have paid for itself and many other bridges by now? Maybe an informed reader could enlighten me as to whether or not it is a never-ending toll? An average commuter will spend €770 per year in crossing the Liffey; that really is a bridge too far. – Yours, etc,
