Madam, - Peter Hain's devious scripting of the proceedings at Stormont castle has almost certainly ended any plans for a devolved assembly, at least for the coming year. The farce that unfolded could hardly have been more one-sided had Mr Adams been the Speaker. Unionist leaders have had their worst fears confirmed and their genuine concerns about policing and law and order have been dismissed out of hand. This was nothing less than a despicable set-up, deliberately designed to put unionists on the back foot. Mr Hain's input has been notable for all the wrong reasons. He should resign. - Yours, etc,
