Sir, - The attitude of the association to the banning of smoking in licensed premises as expressed by their president (The Irish Times, May 23rd) is disappointing.

The argument that a ban would mean the end of the Irish pub as we know it has a distinct ring of panic about it. Is it really foreseeable that an Irish smoker/drinker will simply remain at home?

Isn't it about time that the Irish Vintners' Association faced up to its responsibilities in the general health area and displayed some initiative in tackling the issue so as to perhaps even avoid the last resort of an outright ban.

Would the installation of a properly ventilated smoking room well away from the general drinking area help? Could consideration please be given to the non-sale of cigarettes and matches? Why can licensed premises not highlight the real danger to health that smoking presents, accompanied by an emphatic endorsement from the management?
