Sir, - Maire Mullarney suggests that the problem in the North was that the border was drawn inappropriately. Our only solution, however, is to find a formula that will enable the two Ulster traditions to live in harmony and mutual respect. We will continue to suffer until we all realise that there is no alternative.
A re partition as an attempt to recreate a one culture, loyalist state is not possible. Any partition, even a Border contracted around Belfast, would always have a nationalist minority relatively greater than the 19 per cent unionist minority in Ireland.
