Putting pubs out of business

Sir, - I hear very little about the destruction of the nation's famous and fabulous pub industry

Sir, - I hear very little about the destruction of the nation's famous and fabulous pub industry. Some blame the recession or the Internet and its imaginary world of socialising or even home entertainment systems. However, no other industry has come under such a sustained attack from legislation - reduction in opening times, doubling in excise and bar extension fees, an uncompromising smoking ban and the toughest drink driving legislation in Europe. The result is clear - empty bars across the State, social isolation, disappointed tourists, lifeless town centres and redundancies. And this week I am just another one of perhaps tens of thousands affected as I close my business. Not to worry - I'm off to Tesco to drown my sorrows . . . - Yours, etc,
