Putting brakes on freewheeling cyclists

Sir, – Fintan O’Toole is being driven mad by cyclists (Opinion, June 11th). Amid the all-too-familiar rant, O’Toole levelled one criticism against cyclists that I had not seen before: “They freewheel down hills”. I say, shame on them all, for engaging in that type of behaviour.

This got me to thinking. With some clever engineering it should be possible to incorporate a braking mechanism into the hubs of bicycle wheels, that would make it as difficult to cycle down a hill, as up the same slope. Imagine cyclists standing up on the pedals, straining to get down a hill. Flann O’Brien would have had a field day. – Yours, etc,
