'POPSTARS' AND RTE POLICY

EAMON TIGHE,

EAMON TIGHE,

Sir, - I don't know which I have found more entertaining about Popstars - the TV series itself or the debate it has managed to generate, but in either case hats off to Louis Walsh. Pop music has always been about entertainment rather than the music, Louis has just expanded the concept, and RTE have very wisely got in on the act as well (I believe their stake is worth 5 per cent of eventual record sales). As for the young girl who "lied" about her age, it's hard not to believe that this too was part of the plan.

Finally, as for the "exploited teenagers", I find it hard to believe they didn't appreciate what they were letting themselves in for, and in fact I found their willingness to face probable rejection and possible humiliation much more refreshing than the usual cynicism, corruption and begrudgery you see in the media. Best of luck to all concerned, especially if it will help reduce our TV licence fees! - Yours, etc.,

EAMON TIGHE,
