Multinationals and funding third level

Sir, – When announcing new jobs, foreign corporations cite our educated workforce, rather than our low corporation tax rate, as the main reason for operating in Ireland. As these organisations benefit directly from an educated workforce, surely it would make sense that they contribute more to help address the shortfall in funding for third-level education. This education tax, of say 0.5 per cent, would still leave us with a very low corporation tax rate, but a healthier third-level section. Surely it would be a win-win for everyone. – Yours, etc,

PADDY MEYLER,
