Mr Lawlor's Christmas

Sir, - I have long held the view that those who claim that we have one law for the well-heeled and another for everybody else are wrong and are perhaps using this notion to stir things up a bit for their own ends.

However, this week's deferral of Liam Lawlor's prison sentence, to allow him make a Christmas visit to the US, coming on top of his apparently being facilitated to make covert entry and exit on his last residential visit to Mountjoy prison, makes me wonder if I have been na∩ve about this issue.

To the best of my knowledge, most other recipients of custodial sentences in this State are not afforded these facilities. I feel it is important to remind those who administer the Irish justice system that not only should they ensure that we have the same law for all, but they should also, by their actions, make it clear to the public that we have the same law for all. - Yours, etc.,
