Sir, – When I saw the heading on Matt Williams’s article, “Let’s hear it for the uncle Brians of this world” (Sport, April 2nd), I thought: “Oh no, not another paean to Brian O’Driscoll”. Luckily, I read on, and discovered a gem of a tribute to Fr Brian Ryan, Matt Williams’s recently deceased uncle in Sydney. A Catholic priest, no less, who stuck to his calling with, apparently, a life-time dedicated to the less well-off and the unknowns of our society.
The piece read as a tribute from Matt’s heart and must have given much comfort to the majority of priests and religious reading it who carry out their ministry in such a similar fashion as Fr Brian, unsung and unrecognised in this life. – Yours, etc,
