Madam, – Mary Tolan, an American assistant professor of journalism (Opinion, January 1st), tells of her horrifying experiences in dealing with the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service.

Ms Tolan deserves a wholehearted apology from the Government for her treatment, but it seems unlikely that she will get it from this churlish lot. Most likely the relevant department supports the practice of secrecy in this area as they do in many others. It is time that the Irish people voiced their distaste at this kind of Nazi-style mode of operation. – Yours, etc,
