Sir, Am I alone in finding press coverage of the Eddie O'Connor pay package both back to front and extraordinarily mean spirited? The real scandal, is surely how little he has been paid to run such a successful semi-state operation and how much he has saved the public purse by turning the business around. It is amazing to me that anybody with talent took the job at all.

A moderate British journalist's on a British national newspapers could expect to earn more than that, even a decade ago. A chief executive in the private sector might reasonably expect five times the amount. And as for the barons of recently privatised industries in the UK, often doing a far easier job than that of Mr O'Connor, a seven figure package is apparently de rigueur.

This non-story has yet to feature a single suggestion of wrongdoing on the victim's part and is nastier in concept than the worst efforts of the tabloids, bearing all the hallmarks of personal envy and a minor league private vendetta. For the "respectable" broad sheet press (present company included) to churn out such volumes of ill considered tosh cannot be excused by the onset of the so called silly season. Yours, etc., Delphi Lodge, Leenane, Co Galway.
