Hoping for a swift recovery

Sir, – The Celtic Tiger years were disastrous for our swift populations as many of our older buildings were demolished or renovated. Swifts diligently return to our cities in May each year only to discover that their traditional nest sites have been demolished or blocked up. When swifts lose their nest sites, the chances are that they may never breed again in their lifetime. With a little effort and forward planning, traditional nest sites can be protected and new ones created. This is an area where city planners, architects, builders and local authorities can make a huge difference. Anybody listening? – Yours, etc,
