Hillary Clinton and New York primary

Sir, – I don't know where Robert Lowry (April 21st) plucked his figures from for his utterly misleading vote tallies on the Democratic primary race in New York Irish neighbourhoods.

Here are the real figures in Irish neighbourhoods, as tallied by the New York Times and the Staten Island Advance.

In the 16th congressional district, a close suburb to New York, among the most Irish in the country, including Irish bastions such as Yonkers and Rye, Hillary won 69 per cent to 31 per cent. In the New York Irish populated boroughs and neighbourhoods, she also won Staten Island (Clinton 52, Sanders 47); Woodlawn (Clinton 73,Sanders 27 – parts of another district included in here but there is no way Hillary lost Woodlawn); Sunnyside (Clinton 52, Sanders 47); Upper East Side (Clinton 79, Sanders 28); Elmhurst-Maspeth (perhaps the most Irish neighbourhood these days – Clinton 52, Sanders 48); and Woodside (Clinton 52, Sanders 48).

Mr Sanders did win Bay Ridge and Breezy Point, two conservative Irish enclaves with very low Democratic turnout, but that was it.

Mr Lowry’s gratuitous slap at the “official” Irish was also unwarranted. – Yours, etc,
