Madam, - R.A. Diebold (October 18th) seems to have confused the Green Party's response to car-sharing in bus lanes with the proposal itself. The charge that our stance is ill-considered is surely more apt for a plan which proposes to introduce private vehicles into lanes designed expressly for the optimal passage of buses.

This proposal fails to recognise that the current quality bus corridor system is already creaking under the weight of 10,000 taxis. We believe it would break down altogether if private vehicles were allowed into bus lanes. If such a system failed in Los Angeles due to indiscriminate use of such lanes, why wouldn't the same thing happen here? The proposal is a distraction from the real solution, which is a massive investment in new buses and other public transport infrastructure.

The Green Party will continue to champion that cause. - Yours, etc,
