Declan Kidney’s departure

A chara, – A year or so ago I found myself at a corporate rugby event in the Aviva Stadium (aka Lansdowne Road), at which Declan Kidney and the rest of the Ireland coaching team were meeting the (Leinster) faithful and taking questions. Several questions were asked about tactics and game plans which, I must confess, went well above my head. I raised my hand and next minute found myself – with microphone in hand – presented with the opportunity to address the coaching team. I took the opportunity to simply thank Declan Kidney, and his team, for the many, many happy, successful and fun days he had delivered to the Irish rugby faithful. I do so again today. Thanks for the memories, Declan, and may good health and happiness be yours in the future. – Is mise,

Sir, – While missing out on his dismissal date by a few days, Declan Kidney might do well to bear in mind what Babs Keating said when praise had been heaped on him: “One should always remember that there is only four days between Palm Sunday and Good Friday”. – Yours, etc,
