Sir , – With wall-to-wall media coverage and endless wonder expressed that the new Pope can cook his own dinner and use public transport, it may have escaped the attention of readers and the public at large that the Vatican, of which Pope Francis is absolute monarch, has once again joined with its usual allies – Egypt, Russia, Iran, etc, to oppose women’s rights in the UN.
If people take the time to read exactly what the Vatican and its allies oppose with regard to very basic rights for women and girls, they will see that misogyny is alive and well in the Roman Catholic Church and that it is unlikely in the extreme that a new Pope will change that. – Yours, etc,
