Cyclists and helmets

Sir, – Dan Martin’s unfortunate crash during the Tour de France recently should be a reminder to all cyclists of the importance of using head protection.

Seeing the damage to Dan Martin’s helmet, one can only imagine the consequences of not wearing adequate head protection.

Yet with all the changes in Ireland to the law in motor safety regarding speeding, mobile phone usage, etc, we still live in a country where head protection is not mandatory for cyclists.

Crashes do not have to happen at 70 km/h in order for serious injuries to be acquired.

Seemingly innocuous falls can result in the most life-changing injuries and disabilities. We cyclists are the most vulnerable of all road users, and I believe many deaths and serious injuries could be prevented by making head protection mandatory. – Yours, etc,
