Sir, – Your report (Breaking News, April 10th) on the fate of France’s presidential camel offers food, among other things, for thought. Donated by the government of Mali to François Hollande and left by the French with local villagers for safekeeping, the unfortunate animal was in fact slaughtered and then eaten – apparently in a tagine.
Given our recent issues with meat provenance, the thought occurs: if such meat were to make its way into the Irish supermarket food chain, could we find a camel passing through the aisle of a Lidl? – Yours, etc,
