Sir, – In your obituary of the late Fr Michael Keane, Claremorris (September 3rd) you state that he preached at funeral of hunger striker Michael Gaughan in Ballina in 1974 and that some republicans including Daithí Ó Conaill, walked out of the cathedral in protest.
That is incorrect. The priest in question was the late Fr Michael Kane of Killala Diocese who had no connection to recently deceased from Claremorris in Tuam archdiocese. Indeed some republicans did walk out, but not sure if Ó Conaill was among them when the priest spoke of peace. I happened to be there. – Yours, etc,
