Brexit and the weight of history

Sir, – I strongly concur with Chris Johns, "Ignorance of Irish history means Brexit talks will not end well" (Business Opinion, November 27th). As a dual national of both Irish and British citizenship, having lived and been educated in both countries, the ignorance of Irish history among the British is truly astounding.

It is only in recent years that there has been some visible reconciliation between Britain and Ireland, with Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Co Cork in 2011 was a day I thought I would never see, and the wounds of Ireland’s past are only now beginning to heal. We can only pray that British politicians see sense that a return to a hard Border would be detrimental, to say the least, and is not an option. – Yours, etc,

REBEKAH REVILLE JOY,

London.
