Banks and a question of trust

Sir, – Simon Carswell highlights trust as a major issue for the banks (“Ireland’s bankers have learned little from the crash”, Opinion & Analysis, July 27th). Trust is built on relationship yet staff in the banks are constantly directing customers towards machines and away from people. With Bank of Ireland due to cut over 2,000 jobs, this is obviously how it sees the way forward. Customers know this is all about profit and not about people, and the sense of distrust deepens. Is a new style of bank needed that values relationships? – Yours, etc,

PAUL CONNOLLY,

Cavan.
