Arthur Deeny – a key intervention
Sir, – You published a moving Appreciation on the recently deceased Dublin writer, Arthur Deeny (April 9th).
What also should be appreciated is that Deeny played an important part in the birth of an Irish world phenomenon.
Bill Graham, deceased Hot Press music journalist, was instrumental in the formation of Irish rock band U2, having brought them to the attention of their manager Paul McGuinness.
However, it was Deeny who put McGuinness forward as a manager for U2.
Graham had phoned Deeny looking for a candidate, knowing that Deeny’s brother managed Horslips.
Arthur Deeny recommended McGuinness and the rest, as they say, is Irish rock and roll history. – Yours, etc,
