Madam, – Along with Declan Rice (July 6th), I agree with David McMahon’s point (July 2nd) that an underground transport hub at College Green would make more sense than at Stephen’s Green.

But why construct an underground at all? We can’t afford it.

As for the extension of the Luas, we can’t afford that either. The disruption would be horrendous, and small areas of the city would be favoured to the detriment of others at enormous cost.

Wrights of Ballymena make a beautiful and practical streetcar, ie a hybrid bus/tram, which could be introduced citywide at a fraction of the cost of one underground line, or indeed one Luas line, with no disruption to traffic and minimal disruption to pedestrians for the construction of the all-important smart bus stops.

Wrights’ Streetcars are now powered by a state-of-the-art hybrid-electric system.

They could easily replace the proposed Luas link-up from Stephen’s Green to O’Connell Street, and I’m willing to bet that Dubliners and visitors would love them. All the benefits of Luas without its expensive and disruptive drawbacks.

Your Editorial (July 6th ) lauds the normalisation of cross-Border economic co-operation.

Here is a golden opportunity to extend it. – Yours, etc,
