Sir, – Might I respectfully suggest the bridge should be named after someone who occupies a special place in the hearts of Dubliners and who for 50 years has brought the spirit of Dublin to all corners of the world.

As an unofficial ambassador for his country, he reached out to people everywhere with his talent, good grace and musical virtuosity.

Now that he himself has crossed the great divide, it would honour not only him as a uniquely gifted individual but indirectly the group of which he was a member.

Barney McKenna’s name resonates with respect, warmth and affection with people everywhere and to enshrine it in this way would be a fitting tribute to his memory.
