Farmers struggling as persistent rainy weather delays planting season

Combination of wet weather and rising fuel prices makes crop production increasingly difficult

Sir, – The just arrived fine day is a belated reminder of all farmers and farm contractors have endured thus far this year. The constant rainfall has saturated the ground and made working the fields impossible.

The planting of crops such as potatoes and grain is weeks behind schedule. Those who ply for hire have been unable to enter the fields and therefore have not been able to make the money necessary to meet repayments or make a weekly wage.

The inclement weather, coupled with the increased fuel prices, has combined to make life very challenging indeed for all involved with crop production. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL GLEESON,
