Not just a question of style

I suggest `Americanisms’ should not be used

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – I read that The Irish Times style book was being updated. Could I suggest another addition indicating that Americanisms should not be used? So no more doubling down, shouting out or giving a heads up.

What is wrong with repeating, iterating, acknowledging, advising, informing etc. I have never been on a vacation or staycation, but I have had some memorable holidays at home and abroad.

I am glad to read Keith Duggan in The Irish Times and his excellent reportage from the US and note that he has not succumbed to the use of Americanisms. So down with this sort of thing. – Yours, etc
