Sir, – Paul Murphy TD writes: “In councils right across the country, Labour jumped at the opportunity to coalesce with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. That should give the public fair warning of what it intends to do after the next general election as well” (“Time for a new united left alliance to topple Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael”, Opinion & Analysis, July 4th).
The People Before Profit TD speaks the truth. In Kerry, both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael dropped five percentage points and a council seat each. But rather than join an Independent/Sinn Féin alliance led by the Healy-Raes, who one could never accuse of being left-leaning, Labour’s two councillors instead joined forces with FF/FG to give them the slimmest majority in the 33-seat council chamber.
Old habits die hard. A vote for Labour is a vote for the status quo, if the recent local election results are anything to go by. – Is mise,
