Sir, – Dublin City Council has published a climate action plan, which is a welcome mix of technical measures and ambitions to rethink many aspects of our society (“Dublin to be climate neutral by 2030, says DCC”, News, March 7th).
The plan is part of a series of plans to be published by local authorities across Ireland, setting out local strategies to adapt to extreme weather conditions and stop runaway climate change.
The approach Dublin has developed recognises that climate change is not just about changing weather patterns and rising sea levels; it is deeply intertwined with human behaviour and the everyday decisions we make.
We cannot address climate change unless we all work together, and we are all prepared to change. Climate strategies must therefore address the barriers – physical, financial and psychological – that people experience en route to carbon neutrality.

Patrick Honohan: Ireland surfed the wave of globalisation as long as we could. Here’s what we should do next
Cathy Gannon: ‘I used to ride my pony to school, tie him up and ride him back’
The Guildford Four’s Paddy Armstrong: ‘People thought I was going to be bitter and twisted when I came out of prison’
It is heartening to see Dublin city make room for the insights from behaviour science, and for the creativity of the city’s residents, to help build a climate-resilient Dublin. – Yours, etc,
