Sir, – The library in Trinity College Dublin is in need of a new name. May I suggest the Chuck Feeney Library? This to mark the extraordinary generosity of the many millions of euro which he donated to Irish third-level education.
Some might argue that to so rename the library would be inappropriate given that Chuck Feeney was so insistent on total anonymity during his lifetime. But although inherently modest, is it not self-evident that privacy and anonymity were necessary preconditions to enable him to constructively evaluate and negotiate the next beneficiary of what was a lifetime of philanthropy?
Many other third-level institutions throughout Ireland also benefitted from his munificence. But Trinity is Ireland’s oldest university: and its library is the copyright library for Ireland with duties to all Irish researchers. Some appropriate salutation to Feeney explaining the new name for the library and honouring the scale of his support to third-level education throughout Ireland might also be appropriate. – Yours, etc,
