Sir, – Confirmation by the US that it has deployed weapons in space (“China warns of new arms race after US confirms deployment of space weapons”, US, September 15th) passed without as much as a whisper from politicians or in mainstream media.
The US was one of the original parties to the 1967 United Nations Outer Space Treaty, which commits all participating states to the use of space for exclusively peaceful purposes, and forbids the deployment of any kind of weapons there.
The fact that the US has rode roughshod over yet another aspect of international law and protocol should perhaps come as no surprise.
However, the fact that this last great frontier of discovery and wonder has now become contaminated by the weapons of humankind is a source of sadness to me. – Yours, etc,
