Sir, - Recent letters concerning glare from modern LED headlights on motor vehicles are one-sided and misleading. Any LED headlights causing glare to oncoming traffic on a straight road are faulty and illegal - irrespective of the height of the vehicle. Those on automatic dip that do not respond quickly enough to oncoming traffic are malfunctioning and should be fixed or replaced.
Modern, smart articulated LED headlights provide an extraordinary new level of night-driving vision. I am convinced they have made me a safer driver. - Yours, etc,

Sir, – I fully share Michael O’Meara’s concerns about headlight glare (Letters, September 17th). A number of years ago, as a local councillor, I expressed similar concerns about the manner in which the glare from lights adversely impacted on the visibility of oncoming drivers. It is obvious from your correspondent’s letter and from personal experience that the problem has not gone away.
Surely at this time of great concern about safety on our roads, tolerable luminance should be an absolute priority for vehicle manufacturers and for Government. – Yours, etc,
