Sir, – On a gloriously sunny day recently, I made a visit to the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin. It is some years since I last wandered through its rooms, and I had forgotten the treasures we have sitting there, waiting patiently to be rediscovered.
Jack B Yeats, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Roderic O’Conor, Caravaggio, John Lavery and so many others beckoned as I wandered from room to room. For an hour or two, the outside world with all its usual demands and turmoil could wait.
There is something wonderful about being able to step off the Dart and, within minutes, find yourself surrounded by some of the great works of European and Irish art. No airport, no traffic jams, no overnight bag required.
We sometimes travel thousands of miles to see what is remarkable while overlooking what is on our doorstep. The National Gallery is a reminder that some treasures require neither a passport nor a boarding pass, just the time to go and look. – Yours, etc,
