Trees and hedgerows

Protecting biodiversity

Sir, – Tricia Cusack (Letters, May 1st) makes excellent points about smaller gardens being covered in concrete, diminishing urban biodiversity. Furthermore, it baffles me as to how farmers are constantly being asked to leave hedgerows intact as wildlife corridors, yet within urban boundaries developers and citizens can raze native hedgerows and fell trees on a whim. The only restriction on this destruction of our vital natural environment is nesting season. We need to treat all hedgerows, and particularly mature trees, as equally essential. – Is mise,
