Public transport – joining the dots

Getting from A to B

Sir, – Greenpeace has highlighted how poorly Dublin’s public transport system rates on a number of headings (“Dublin ranked worst for public transport in Europe due to price and ways to buy tickets”, News, May 4th). I would suggest that poor and partial infrastructure planning is at the root of our woes. One example of this was the belated linking of the two Luas lines some years after completion. History is now repeating itself with the plan to extend the Dart to Hazelhatch and Maynooth independently. Linking these two Dart lines could be achieved by laying 7km of new track between Hazelhatch and Leixlip via Celbridge. The new circular line with trains running in both directions would link many population centres and open up a whole new perspective on travel in west Dublin and north Kildare. I call upon those implementing this next incomplete development to pause for thought and consider what could be a highly innovative and imaginative public transport initiative. – Yours, etc,

DAVE CORMACK,

Leixlip,

Co Kildare.
