Sir, – Cllr Eoin O’Broin of the Social Democrats thinks the Nupes political alliance in France should be classed as centre left. It makes one wonder where the centre is for the Social Democrats.
The head of Nupes, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, has supported Russia’s annexation of Crimea, blamed Nato for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, wants to leave Nato, wants to renegotiate the EU treaties and thinks wealth should be redistributed in France by government fiat. He also made comments regarding Jews that have been criticised by many as anti-Semitic. He has asked his supporters to monitor and film journalists. Mr Mélenchon is a far-left politician who brings the same demagoguery and populism to the table as Marine Le Pen. – Yours, etc,
