A mandatory code for the transport of irradiated nuclear fuels at sea will be called for today by the Minister for Marine and Natural Resources at a London conference.

Dr Woods will ask the general assembly of the International Maritime Organisation to agree that the existing voluntary code governing the transport of such materials be adopted as mandatory.

He will also present a draft resolution on notification regarding safe carriage of irradiated nuclear fuel, plutonium and high-level radioactive wastes in flasks on board ships.
