A woman in her twenties has been released by Gardaí after being questioned in connection with the death of a man in a stabbing in Dundalk.

A 28-year-old woman also suffered what appeared to be stab wounds to the neck. She is said to be in a stable condition in Louth Co Hospital.

The man, believed to be in his early thirties, was found by an ambulance team at a house in Slieve Rowe Crescent, Muirhevnamore at 2 a.m. on Saturday morning and pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary postmortem results - carried out by State pathologist, Dr John Harbison - indicate the man died as a result of stab wounds to the chest.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
