Woman dies after fall from Cliffs of Moher

A tourist died today after falling from the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast of Ireland.

A tourist died today after falling from the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast of Ireland.

The woman, believed to be in her 30s, was sightseeing at the treacherous Co Clare beauty spot when she feel almost 600ft into the Atlantic Ocean beneath.

The woman was with a friend just south of the viewing platform on what are reputedly Europe's highest cliffs when she fell. A search operation was launched by the nearby Doolin Coast Guard and the Aran Island lifeboat.

A rescue helicopter based at Shannon Airport recovered the women from the water at around 1.15pm. The rescue team tried to resuscitate the victim on the way to Galway University Hospital, where she died.
