London - The international moratorium on commercial whaling was assured for at least another year yesterday after moves led by Japan for an end to the 15-year ban fizzled out. Officials at the International Whaling Commission (IWC), meeting in London, said the hotly disputed and widely flouted ban would continue.
Japan, leading a clutch of pro-whaling nations, accepted that the fight was over for now but promised to raise the subject again when the IWC meets next year in Tokyo.
