Wexford and Waterford served up a rare treat of hurling at Nowlan Park this evening, with the hurlers of Wexford progressing to the next round of the qualifying series.

The first ever meeting of the counties had been hotly anticipated and the match didn't disappoint, ebbing and flowing before Wexford took control in the final quarter.

Waterford enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, racing into an early five-point lead thanks to the sharp shooting of Ken McGrath.

But the introduction of Larry Murphy galvanised Wexford and a Michael Jacob goal on the stroke of half-time left the game in the balance.

Wexford carried that momentum into the second half and, with captain Paul Codd in imperious form, gradually wore Waterford down, running out five point winners.
