Wexford very nearly pulled off a shock victory over Tyrone at Wexford Park this evening losing out by 1-9 to 0-10. Tyrone appeared to be in control despite a Peter Canavan penalty miss and lead comfortably at the break.

Wexford rallied well after the restart as they endeavored to reduce the deficit but despite keeping the Northerners scoreless for the last twenty minutes of the match they fell just short at the end.

Longford advanced to the next round of the qualifiers with a 1-16 to 0-14 victory over Down at Pearse Park. Points were traded early in the opening period before a David Bardon goal gave Longford an edge which they would not surrender. Down improved in the second half and although they finished the match the stronger Longford were always in control.

At Dr Cullen Park Laois proved too strong for Pat Roe’s Carlow and ran out 0-18 to 0-9 victors. Carlow’s preparations could not have been worse having suffered the tragic loss of captain Andrew Corden and they were never really at the races here as Laois put their defeat to Offaly behind them to advance to the next round.
