A US dotcom has arranged a Back the Net Day in a bid to revive the internet sector's ailing stockmarket fortunes.

San Francisco-based firm Iconocast is asking users to venture online next Tuesday to do something to halt the net recession.

Iconocast wants people to make an online purchase or invest in a handful of dotcom shares.

The campaign is being backed by McAfee, Excite and Net France.

"If this trend continues you might soon lose access to your favourite online store, greeting card site, news source, music site or financial chat group," reads Iconoclast's online manifesto.

"Imagine the internet without Excite, Yahoo or Amazon."

Surfers unwilling to make a purchase are invited to demonstrate their solidarity by donating something to a web charity site instead.
