A number of weapons and a quantity of ammunition were seized in Limerick last night after gardaí carried out planned searches as part of an ongoing investigation into serious crime.

Two sawn-off shotguns, a rifle and some ammunition were recovered from an open area off the Childers Road last night.

A suspect package, containing what is described as "four viable pipe bombs", was also recovered at the scene.

The searches were part of an investigation into serious crime in the Roxboro Road Garda District area in Limerick.
