Four containers of waste are on their way back from Belgium to Limerick Waste Recycling after a claim that correct notification procedures had not been adhered to.
Limerick City Council said they will be examining the contents of the containers on Monday.
Belgian authorities had examined a number of containers in Antwerp, on their way to Asia for recycling, after a tip-off from Dutch officials who had detected a problem with other Irish containers.
Another 12 containers are due to be transported to Barna Waste in Co Galway. Other containers, sent by agents for other local authorities, are still being detained in Antwerp.
The containers had been designated as containing dry recyclable material but Belgian authorities are alleging that they contained other materials. Officers from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will view the consignment next week.
The detention in Antwerp came just months after a similar consignment was intercepted in Rotterdam.
Nine local authorities involved are assisting the EPA in its inquiries: Waterford, Cork, Clare, Fingal, South Tipperary, Galway and Kerry county councils, as well as Dublin and Limerick city councils.
