Motorists have been warned to take 'extreme care' after overnight heavy rain resulted in disruption on roads across the country.

Excess surface water and flooding have been reported in many parts. AARoadwatch has advised motorists to drive with extra care and avoid driving through flood water.

Parts of Dublin, Cork, Wexford, Limerick and Tipperary have been hit by flooding.

Met Éireann has issued a gale warning locally heavy or thundery rain predicted for many areas.

Conditions are expected to improve later today with drier weather spreading eastwards across all parts during the morning with a few scattered showers. Strong winds extending countrywide this morning, but easing later in many areas, and especially in the south.

A weather warning is in place in Northern Ireland where heavy rain is expected.
